Date

Thursday, 29 Nov 2018 6:30 PM

This month we plan to have a Lean Coffee (http://leancoffee.org/) format for the evening where we all get to choose topics to discuss, vote for the ones we want to discuss and then start discussing topics for around 10 minutes, starting with the most popular.

We look forward to seeing you, having some good discussions and helping out with any WordPress problems you might be having.

6.30pm – Doors open
6.45pm – Pizza & Drinks
7.00pm – Discussion

The meetup is a free event. Pizza and drinks supplied by our sponsors 34SP.com (https://34SP.com) and Delicious Brains (https://deliciousbrains.com/).

*The Venue*

The Chocolate Box is situated at 8-10 Christchurch Road. It’s the building that once had NatWest bank on the ground floor and is opposite the Gala Bingo building.

When you arrive, please use the large entrance on the right of the building which has the words “The Chocolate Box 8-10” written above it and an electric vehicle charging point outside.

Press number 14 on the keypad and you will be let in. We’ll put up signs directing you to the location of the meetup. It will be on the 1st floor.

The building is 100% accessible with a ramp to the main entrance and lifts to all floors.

Venue kindly supplied by Media Lounge and JD
https://www.medialounge.co.uk/
https://jderrick.co.uk/

*Parking*

There are free car parking spaces directly outside the building. The signs say that you can only park for 30 minutes but that’s only until 7pm so if you arrive after 6.30 then you should be good!

Alternatively, there are often spaces along Gervis or Meyrick Road.

There are also various pay and displays in the area, the closest being Cotlands Road:

This month we welcome back Tim Nash from our sponsor 34SP.com who has spoken twice here in the past, and always provides an entertaining and informative talk.

“Come to the Dark Side, we have cookies”

> Everyone should be a little bit worried about security of their site, and at conferences lots of security talks focus on practical steps people can take. In this talk Tim will flip the norms and instead focus on several real examples of sites being hacked but from the attackers perspective. We will see the whole attacks from the bad actors view identifying targets, analysing vulnerable sites, adding payload, exploiting in doing so showing how sites are infected, how some tools do prevent certain attacks and how clever and indeed not so clever bad actors can circumvent lots of hardening done.

> Each step we can analyse what could have been put in place to prevent and frustrate the attack and then look at how this can be implemented on your site.

Tim is the 34SP.com WordPress Platform Lead & Developer advocate. He is responsible for the management of the WordPress platform and keeping thousands of sites running fast and staying secure. He is also known to give the odd talk here and there and when he can blog and appear randomly on Youtube. Tims own site is timnash.co.uk and he writes about everything from security to home automation with a healthy dose of WordPress and humour.

We look forward to seeing you, having some good discussions and helping out with any WordPress problems you might be having.

Wow, last month really was a great meetup – lots of new faces with great discussions on various topics.

This month we return to having a speaker, as we welcome back Adam Tomat, who previously came to speak exactly 2 years ago.

“Supercharging WordPress Development in 2018”

> Often WordPress themes are not easy to change, maintain or fun to work on. This can rule WordPress out as a viable option for bespoke, non-trivial websites.

> In this talk we’ll dive into how this happens & look at how we make your theme easier to change. For the more technical attendees, we will also go into how using Lumberjack, a powerful MVC framework built on Timber, can be used to power-up your themes.

Adam is a lead developer at Rareloop in Southampton (https://www.rareloop.com/) . He is an advocate for progressive enhancement, accessibility, collaboration, OSS, and making code easy to change.

We look forward to seeing you, having some good discussions and helping out with any WordPress problems you might be having.

We also set up our Facebook group after it was suggested last month – https://www.facebook.com/groups/1858422950908992/

7.00pm – Talk
